Ex Machina Director’s New Movie Casts Jessie Buckley

A24 is set to finance and distribute Ex Machina director Alex Garland’s new film Men, and Jessie Buckley is in talks to lead the cast.

Acclaimed writer/director Alex Garland is slated to reunite with A24 for his new film Men, and Jessie Buckley is in talks to star. Garland is best known for penning the script for 28 Days later and writing and directing sci-fi thrillers Ex Machinaand AnnihilationMen marks Garland’s first feature since Annihilation in 2018 and his first time working with A24 since Ex Machina in 2014, which became the distributor’s first film to win an Oscar. Garland most recently helmed the FX limited series Devs, about a software engineer whose boyfriend mysteriously dies during his first day on the job with her company.

According to Variety, A24 is set to finance and distribute Garland’s upcoming film Men and Jessie Buckley is set to star. Buckley, who starred in Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things as well as Fargo, Chernobyl, and Wild Rose, will play a woman who journeys to the English countryside following the death of her ex-husband. Rory Kinnear (Penny Dreadful, Black Mirror) is set to join the project as the ex-husband.

While its premise doesn’t imply any aspects of fantasy, Men will be – perhaps unsurprisingly, considering Garland’s filmography – a science fiction film. It’ll be interesting to see how Garland, who’s also writing the film’s script, takes a realistic premise and weaves elements of sci-fi throughout the story. Kinnear seems like a good match for a Garland film considering his work on the Black Mirror pilot. Garland has a penchant for existential mindblowers, and after Buckley’s breakout turn in I’m Thinking of Ending Things, she also seems to perfectly fit his style.
