Symbiote Spider-Man: King in Black #3 finds Spider-Man, in his symbiote suit, fighting with Kang as he learns the bad guy is actually trying to save the universe. Once Spider-Man realizes Kang is on his side (this time), he learns about the shadowy creatures that Knull’s unleashed. Kang ejects one of the creatures who was possessing Captain Marvel and the group realizes that Mister E is heading to Knowhere to find the troll Ulcia to destroy Black Knight’s Ebony Blade – a weapon shown to be super effective against Knull and his minions. However, Kang reveals she’s on Knowhere to hide from her brother Ulik, who finds her as Mister E asks her to destroy the blade.
Ulik first appeared in Thor #137 and was created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. The Rock Troll lived on Asgard and was among the most powerful brutes in the galaxy. Ulik has been a consistent adversary for Thor as he’s battled the God of Thunder and his Asgardian allies on multiple occasions. His emerges in this story complicated Mister E’s plan to destroy the Ebony Blade, as Ulik will certainly swing first and ask questions later. Ulik might have inadvertently saved the galaxy, preventing the blade from being destroyed, which could eventually be used to take down the King in Black.
Black Knight’s showdown with the King in Black has already been teased, as the Ebony Blade will play a key part in his fight against Knull. It likely would have never made its way back to him if Ulik didn’t intervene to fight his sister. In this case, Ulik’s rage might be the best thing to happen to the heroes looking for Black Knight’s Ebony Blade, the King in Black’s biggest weakness.
