A Lost Tomb Raider Remake Has Been Dug Up

In a story befitting of Lady Lara Croft, seemingly lost game assets for an unfinished Tomb Raider installment have been unearthed.

Fans of Lady Lara Croft are in for a treat, as a lost Tomb Raider remake has recently been dug up… and it is fully playable. Tomb Raider has been a longstanding franchise in the gaming world. Seeing Lara as she took on tomb after tomb in her shorter than short shorts was a key part of many people’s upbringing.

Today, Lara sports an overall more conservative and realistic look. When the Tomb Raider franchise was rebooted in 2013, Lara was portrayed as a young and somewhat naïve woman that had to deal with the moral ramifications of her actions. This is something that was completely omitted from previous offerings of Tomb Raider games. Back in the early days of Lara’s conception, she was often seen using her iconic twin pistols to remove any obstacle that stood in the way of her achieving her goal.

For fans of Tomb Raider who wish to hark back to these simpler times, there is exciting news. A lost Tomb Raider remake has been unearthed and shared online. Originally titled “Tomb Raider: 10th Anniversary Edition”, the game was cancelled before completion. It then almost became an Indiana Jones title, although this went on to be scrapped too. Instead, Crystal Dynamics took over the franchise and Core Design closed down, apparently losing all of the Tomb Raider work in the process. However, the lost assets of the game have now been rediscovered and shared by Internet Archive.

Tomb Raider website Tomb of Ash then expanded upon this find and have compiled a full set of instructions that will enable fans to play the unearthed remake for themselves. Footage of the gameplay has also been shared by Roli’s Tomb Raider Channel. This footage shows Lara Croft exploring through the caves of Peru and beyond. No enemies are included in the gameplay, but seeing Lara climbing, leaping, and exploring in her Core Design style is a great throwback for long-standing fans of the Tomb Raider series.

Square Enix has also been feeling nostalgic of late. The publisher recently shared several Tomb Raider Easter eggs that can be found within the PS5s Astro’s Playroom on its social media feed. This includes a clip that depicts one bot jumping from ledge to ledge in the unmistakable tank top and shorts combo favored by Lara during her earlier adventures.

Lara Croft and Tomb Raider are beloved by many gamers out there. Lara’s most recent reboot trilogy was tied up nicely back in 2018. Since then, a free-to-play mobile game called Tomb Raider Reloaded has been announced by Square Enix and set to be released later this year. Until it is released though, this fresh (and yet still old) Tomb Raider remake will provide a fun stopgap for fans of the franchise.
