During an interview, former Thor writer Jason Aaron teases an upcoming team-up story that he’ll be doing with current Thor writer Donny Cates.
Former Thor writer Jason Aaron is teasing a potential team-up with current Thor writer Donny Cates in the pages of a future Marvel comic. Aaron raises the possibility in an interview where he talks about Jane Foster returning to heroics as Valkyrie in King in Black: Return of the Valkyries. Both have written for Thor and currently have stories related to the King in Black event.
Aaron spent seven years writing Thor-related stories, including Thor: God of Thunder, Mighty Thor, and War of the Realms, writing amazing reveals such as the real reason why Thor is the God of Thunder. He went on to co-write every issue of Valkyrie: Jane Foster, leading into the King in Black: Return of the Valkyries four-issue mini-series. Cates took over the Thor book after Aaron’s departure. He is also writing the current Venom series, which ties into the King in Black event.

In an interview with Games Radar, Aaron talks about writing a story with Cates: “We’ve talked about it a few times, it’s just something that hasn’t quite shaken out schedule-wise yet.” He goes on to say, “But it’s definitely something we’re both interested in when everything lines up.” This promising team-up may not have a specified date, but it is certainly something Thor fans can look forward to.
The writers have shared storylines and characters before that have gone on to shape the Marvel Universe as a whole. Notably, Aaron and Cates, along with artists Butch Guice and Ryan Stegman, contributed to the creation of Knull, aka the King in Black, god of the symbiotes. Knull first appeared in Thor: God of Thunder #6, written by Aaron and drawn by Guice, as an unnamed character, beginning as more of a plot device. He was later named and developed as a character in his first full appearance in Venom #3, written by Cates and illustrated by Stegman. His weapon, the Necrosword, was explored further by Aaron in the pages of Thor and King Thor.
These two titans putting their combined Thor-related writing experiences together could create a thunderous Thor story or Knull-centric story. However, since Aaron doesn’t give away any specifics, it’s possible the story he writes with Cates could be totally unrelated to Thor and instead explore another facet of the Marvel universe. In the meantime, fans will have to make do with the connections between their works within the King in Black: Return of the Valkyries mini-series Aaron is co-writing with Torunn Grønbekk and art by Nina Vakueva.
