Suicide Squad Video Gives Detailed Look at Bloodsport’s Costume

A panel for The Suicide Squad at CCXP reveals new facets of the long-awaited film — including a closer look at the costume of Idris Elba’s Bloodsport.

A new video out of the CCXP event in Brazil has offered a fresh and more detailed look at Bloodsport’s costume in The Suicide Squad. Created by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru, an early incarnation of the titular team debuted in 1959’s The Brave and the Bold #25. The original team was comprised of physicist Jess Bright, astronomer Dr. Hugh Evans, a flight medic named Karin Grace, and Rick Flag Jr. A second and more modernized version, also known as Task Force X and comprised mostly of lesser-known villains, was created by John Ostrander in 1987. The latter spawned several on-screen iterations, featuring on Arrow and as the basis for 2016’s Suicide Squad — which starred Will Smith and Margot Robbie as Deadshot and Harley Quinn, respectively.

Despite a healthy box office run and even earning an Academy Award, Suicide Squad was widely panned by critics and moviegoers alike. Director David Ayer has since insisted that studio intervention ultimately butchered the film and that his cut was ultimately a more satisfying product. In the wake of the successful Justice League Snyder Cut campaign, many stated that, similarly, the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad should be released on HBO Max. Regardless of whether or not that comes to fruition, Warner Bros have already shifted direction with its DCEU. With James Gunn hired to write and direct, the highly anticipated follow-up/soft-reboot will reportedly have a more comedic yet heavily R-rated tone. It was also previously confirmed that the film will feature a newly-expanded cast.

One such newcomer to the franchise will be Idris Elba’s Bloodsport. Appearing on the official CCXP panel, Elba spoke briefly about his character’s costume. “He has a very cool costume, you know,” the actor said. “His costume is seriously innovative and technically advanced.” That description was backed up by an image of it in all its glory and a quick projection of how the suit can literally manufacture instantaneous weaponry. Elba also revealed that nobody but his character can use the suit and that Bloodsport will use it in a “brutal” fashion. A clip of the moment (and the full look at the costume in action) was posted by Geeks of Color on their Twitter page. Check it out below:

Gunn was also on hand for the panel and revealed that the final edit of The Suicide Squad has been completed. The other members of the cast present included Nathan Fillion, Flula Borg, Alice Braga, Daniela Melchior, and John Cena. As Christopher Smith (aka Peacemaker), Cena is already confirmed to be reprising his role in a spin-off series on HBO Max. However, it’s unclear whether it will be a sequel or a prequel — leaving it very much up in the air whether or not he will actually survive the events of the film. Cena did reveal, though, that he almost made himself sick during one scene, when his own hubris necessitated that Cena had to eat 31 empanadas in quick succession.

Despite the completed edit of the film and eager anticipation, there was no new footage released at CCXP. As such, the wait for the first official trailer will continue at least a little while longer. Still, the passion that the cast has continued to express for the film suggested that it will very much live up to the hype. And based on the brief tease in the above video, Bloodsport in action will be something to behold when fully realized on-screen. The nature of the suit could lend itself to emphasizing why Bloodsport was even able to nearly bring down Superman — if the film has opted to include such an element to his backstory. Whatever the case, Bloodsport will no doubt prove to be a worthy adversary to rumored villain Starro and any other threats faced by members of The Suicide Squad.
