The Last of Us is considered to be one of the best story-driven video games of all time by many gamers and critics. Released by the veteran gaming studio, Naughty Dog (Uncharted), in 2013, the franchise has seen a sequel, The Last of Us 2, which was released earlier this year, and five attempts at creating a live-action movie.
Since those plans to bring the game to life on the silver screen, Sony is now bringing the survival-horror drama to life along with HBO in 2021. What will HBO do with the amazing story created by the scribes at Naughty Dog, who will be cast, and when exactly will it be released? Here’s everything we know thus far.
10 Who Is Developing The Last of Us For TV?
A question which many asked before it was announced that HBO would be behind The Last of Us. The upcoming drama horror survival series will be executive produced by some of HBO’s most talented, as well as some talent from the video game franchise. Included in the lineup for the project is Craig Mazin (Chernobyl), Carolyn Strauss (Chernobyl), Neil Drukmann (“The Last of Us” and “Uncharted” video game franchises), and Evan Wells (Naughty Dog). Also joining the production from Playstation is Asad Qizlibash and Carter Swan.
9 Who Is Writing The Script?
The Last of Us has some of gaming’s best dialogue, voice actors and features one of the best plots in a video game. It will be of vital importance that HBO, therefore, recruits writers who can truly adapt the game’s brilliant dialogue for TV. The series will be written by Mazin and Druckmann. In a statement on November 20th, Francesa Orsi, the executive vice president at HBO Programming said the following:
“Craig and Neil are visionaries in a league of their own. With them at the helm alongside the incomparable Carolyn Strauss, this series is sure to resonate with both die-hard fans of ‘The Last of Us’ games and newcomers to this genre-defining saga. We’re delighted to partner with Naughty Dog, Word Games, Sony and PlayStation to adapt this epic, powerfully immersive story.”
8 The Plot
The synopsis for the upcoming HBO adaptation of The Last of Us, will follow the events of the original 2013 game. Two decades after modern civilization collapsed, Joel, a survivor, is tasked with smuggling Ellie, a fourteen-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone.
Those that have played the game will remember, what starts out as a simple job quickly descends into a brutal, heartbreaking, and tear-jerking journey as the two traverse the U.S. with only each other to rely on.
7 Who Will Direct The Last of Us?
HBO’s The Last of Us has recruited the talents of Johan Renck, who’s also an executive director on the show. Renck will more than likely direct the first episode of the show and produce others as well. Renck is known for his work Mazin, when he directed Chernobyl and has also directed episodes of Bates Motel, Halt and Catch Fire, and perhaps most relevantly, The Walking Dead, another popular post-apocalyptic drama.
6 The Score
The Last of Us video game franchise has been praised for its magnificent, eerie, and atmospheric soundtrack. In addition to Druckmann and Wells, the show’s score will be created by Gustavo Santaolalla, who’s produced the score for both games, as is also known for his work on Jane the Virgin and Making a Murderer.
5 Sony Pictures
On the financial, distribution, and business side of things, The Last of Us will be co-produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment in a team effort with Playstation Productions. Sony Pictures Entertainment are veterans in the television game, with credits including The Boys, Seinfeld, and Breaking Bad.
As for Playstation Productions, The Last of Us will be their first TV production. Playstation Productions have previously announced another video game to movie production, Uncharted which is also slated for release in 2021.
4 The Cast
At this stage, no official casting announcements have been made yet, however, one name that has already come up in rumors and reports, solely because she brought it up, is Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones). Williams allegedly approached Druckmann and Raimi way back in 2014 or 2015 when the Spider-Man director was producing the now-canned movie adaptation of The Last of Us.
3 The Last of Us Premiere
As is the case with all TV and film productions these days, the production of HBO’s The Last of Us series has of course been adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. As opposed to several productions that had started principal photography and had to cease production, Mazin said that he and Druckmann have only just moved into the writing stage of the production. Of course, this means that The Last of Us, probably won’t be dropping on HBO in early 2021.
2 When is The Last of Us Set?
At this stage, it seems that HBO’s The Last of Us, will take place chronologically somewhere between the events of the first and second video game.
Unless the writers decide to go the route of going down a completely new narrative, which might not be too much of a bad idea, considering that The Last of Us 2 garnered such polarizing reviews from critics and gamers.
At this stage, not much has been said as to who could be cast as Ellie, Joel, or any of the supporting characters. One possible name that could appear in the credits is Ashley Johnson, who voices Ellie in the Last of Us games, though it’s unlikely that she’d be able to play Ellie, considering her age. However, given the love she’s received for her roles in Blindspot, she could very well be cast as a doctor/scientist which Ellie and Joel visit in the game’s narrative. Another fan favorite to play Ellie could be the acclaimed Booksmart‘s Kaitlyn Dever. Dever even has notably talented skills on the guitar, which is perfect for playing Ellie.
