The cover for Cavan Scott’s new novel Star Wars: The High Republic – The Rising Storm showed off a brand new Force-sensitive character. The novel is a larger part of The High Republic series of Star Wars books and comics. This era in Star Wars history is set about 200 years before The Skywalker Saga and 800 years after the fall of the “Old Republic.” The core of the story in The High Republic era sees the Jedi Order, at the height of their power, dealing with the galactic threat of the Nihil, who are essentially space Vikings.

The Rising Storm (via StarWars.com) is the second adult novel set during this era, following up Charles Soule’s upcoming Star Wars: The High Republic – Light of the Jedi. Characters like Jedi Council member Stellan Gios and Padawan Bell Zettifar, who had been mentioned in previous High Republic stories, will be part of the core cast in Storm. Scott’s novel also introduces a brand new character – Ty Yorrick – a mercenary who wields a lightsaber. Scott describes her as a “Force-sensitive monster hunter with a mysterious past.

The High Republic stories aim to redefine the Force. Talented Force-sensitive characters who haven’t been touched at all by the teachings of the Jedi or Sith are rare in Star Wars. Ty Yorrick – who seems to not easily fall into the Jedi/Sith dichotomy – could be an interesting way to explore what the Force means to people outside of the Jedi’s strict tenets.

The novel’s synopsis reads: “The Rising Storm sees the Nihil taking their reign of terror to the next level. Standing in their way this time are newly elevated Jedi Council member Stellan Gios, along with Padawan Bell Zettifar and an intriguing new character, the saber-for-hire Ty Yorrick.” It is set to be released on July 6, 2021.
