Why Porno Is Being Compared To The Evil Dead & Lovecraftian Horror Movies

The horror comedy Porno is being compared to The Evil Dead and other Lovecraftian horror movies, but are these comparisons actually warranted?

In recent years, Lovecraftian horror movies have increased in popularity, resulting in movies such as Porno taking on familiar elements to craft demonic creatures and impeccably gruesome special effects. The horror comedy movie has garnered attention for its ability to capture a similar essence to Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, but does it truly warrant the comparison? Here’s why Porno is being compared to the cult classic and other Lovecraftian horror movies.

Porno follows a group of teenagers who work at a movie theater in the 1990s. After a stranger uncovers a hidden room, they discover a movie reel with a demonic symbol etched onto its case. When they play it, a succubus is released and wreaks havoc until it is inevitably recaptured before dawn. Porno’s movie reel shares several similarities with Sam Raimi’s cult classic, The Evil Dead, which starred Bruce Campbell as Ashley “Ash” Joanna Williams, the franchise’s iconic lead. The Evil Dead is one of the most popular renditions of Lovecraftian lore due to its use of the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis — the book of the dead. H. P. Lovecraft created several grimoires over his the course of his literary career, but only the Necronomicon has ever garnered such impressive prevalence in popular culture. While the physical book is never featured in Porno, its movie reel’s similarities to it are partially the reason behind the Lovecraftian comparisons.

Traditionally, Lovecraftian horror movies feature surreal depictions of ancient demons, monsters, and creatures. The adaptation of “The Colour Out Of Space” includes the cosmic sci-fi horror elements that fans of Lovecraft’s literary works are familiar with, but it is not entirely common for them to appear in movies. Porno doesn’t necessarily utilize this element fully, it does have moments where the cosmic Lovecraft peaks through alongside its rendition of a Necronomicon.

What qualifies a movie as a Lovecraftian horror story is relatively loose, but Porno qualifies, as it has crucial elements that have been utilized in others that fall under the same category. However, it shares the most similarities with The Evil Dead. Porno features demonic possession as a result of a succubus breaking free from a purposefully hidden movie reel. In Raimi’s movie, a group of friends go to an isolated cabin in the woods. During dinner, the fruit cellar’s door bursts open, leading them to discover a recording of the Necronomicon being read as well as the physical book. Not knowing the power it holds, they play the tape and set demons free on Earth.

The demonic possession featured in Porno and The Evil Dead are entirely similar as they both depict their characters as have icy skin, white or yellow eyes, and a demonic tone playing over their actual voice. Their demons are also conjured the same way. Porno’s cosmic horror elements come through in certain scenes where the color palette resembles Richard Stanley’s Color Out Of Space with rich hues of greens, blues, and reds throughout. The 2019 movie is one of three in the director’s Lovecraft trilogy and, just like The Evil Dead, includes a bizarre possession, but through different means.

Porno has been compared to Lovecraftian horror movies due to its use of the sub-genre’s most popular elements: an ancient demon, possession, rich cosmic hues, and a version of the Necronomicon. These comparisons are entirely warranted as there are undeniable Lovecraftian influences featured in the movie. While it is not entirely the same as The Evil Dead or other popular movies that fall under the category, Porno includes one of the most unique depictions of a Necronomicon inspired movie reel as well as demonic possession familiar to the sub-genre, which establishes that it clearly belongs amongst the others in this rising trend of 2020.
