While some of the houses of Maldraxxus in World of Warcraft’s Shadowlands continue to grow in strength, others are dangerously close to extinction.
World of Warcraft has always included a number of interesting factions, from the Alliance and Horde to the new covenants introduced in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. While the official Maldraxxus covenant is known as the Necrolords, the zone is actually home to five distinct “houses.” When questing through Maldraxxus it is easy to miss details about the five groups, all of which have separate strengths, leadership, and goals.
The house players will become most familiar with while leveling is the House of the Chosen, since they are tasked with joining them early on in the Maldraxxus questline. The House of the Chosen is filled with the strongest souls that departed the mortal world, and therefore has a formidable army with which to fend off any threats. The house is initially led by Margrave Krexus, with a major returning World of Warcraft character in Draka serving as one of the top barons, but by the end of the Maldraxxus storyline this is not the case.

Draka was not always a member of the House of the Chosen, and was actually one of the top ranking members of the House of Eyes first. This Shadowlands house values cunning and intelligence, and their spies have often played an important part in providing information to the other houses. The house has actually fallen by the time the Maw Walker arrives, and few members remain. Since the fall, the House of Eyes has been led by the Naga Lady Vashj, and has allied itself with Maldraxxus’ House of the Chosen.
The Houses of Plagues, Constructs, & Rituals in Shadowlands
Alongside the House of Eyes, the House of Plagues has also fallen from power by the time World of Warcraft: Shadowlands’ story begins. The house was formerly home to genius apothecaries and plague bringers, and were able to use the concoctions for all matters of war and defense. Although the current leader of the House of Plagues is unknown, its former leader Margrave Stradama is actually the final boss of World of Warcraft dungeon Plaguefall. It can be assumed that many of the former members of the House of Plagues have joined together with the House of the Chosen, although the player only has the chance to meet a few.
Shadowlands’ House of the Constructs is one of the two houses in Maldraxxus that have aligned themselves with the Jailer, and are partially responsible for the attack on Bastion. The house specializes in the creation of massive undead monsters, which have traditionally combined with the House of the Chosen to make up the bulk of the Maldraxxus’ army. The House of the Constructs is led by Baron Halis, a monstrosity that poses a major threat to the Maw Walker and their allies.
The final house in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands’ Maldraxxus is the House of Rituals, which is home to many powerful sorcerers and liches. These magic-users specialize in combat and are an important part to the formidable Maldraxxus army. One of the houses’ barons is Kel’Thuzad, a lich who veteran World of Warcraft players may remember from the Naxxramus raid. Kel’Thuzad has aligned himself with The Jailer, meaning that many of the House of Rituals forces now oppose the Maw Walker and The House of the chosen.
With two houses nearing extinction, and the entire zone entrenched in a civil war, Maldraxxus has some of the most interesting storylines in all of World of Warcraft: Shadowlands. Although some of the houses are not fully explored in the initial questline, players will have a chance to learn more about them during the various dungeons and raids in the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands expansion.
