The Bachelorette season 16 star Ivan Hall shared that he’s the first half Black, half Asian contestant in the history of the show. The fans have long complained about the lack of diversity in The Bachelor franchise as a whole. The first Black lead on a season of The Bachelorette only took place on season 13, which was led by Rachel Lindsay. When it comes to The Bachelor, the show will finally get a Black lead in 2021, when season 25 premieres starring Matt James. And while it is important for these moves to be made in the name of progress, there’s no denying that the series has a lot of catching up to do.

When compared to other dating competitions such as Netflix’s Love Is Blind and CBS’ Love Island, it is easy to see how far behind The Bachelor still is. The most popular couple that came out of the first season of Love Is Blind was an interracial relationship between Lauren Speed and Cameron Hamilton. Also in 2020, Justine Ndiba and Caleb Corprew became the first-ever Black couple to win a season of Love Island – which has only been airing for two years in the US. Comparatively, it is pretty astounding that The Bachelor (in 24 seasons) and The Bachelorette (in 15 seasons) can only point to Rachel Lindsay as the sole example.
In a tweet (seen below) that accompanied his heartfelt conversation with Tayshia Adams in a recent episode of The Bachelorette, Ivan Hall wrote: “Proud to be the first blasian (1/2 black 1/2 asian) in the history of the show!” There have been, of course, other Black and other Asian contestants in the series – but Ivan is highlighting the historical significance of having someone of mixed race who identifies as both Black and Asian. This is yet another similarity that he shares with Tayshia Adams, who is also mixed. But in Tayshia’s case, she is Black and Latina. In a picture shared on his Instagram page (also seen below), the fans can spot Ivan having a celebration with his Asian family. In the caption under the photo, Ivan included a flag emoji that indicates that his Asian family is from the Philippines.

The Bachelor Nation fans loved Ivan’s conversation with Tayshia so much that he is, by all intents and purposes, the current frontrunner to win The Bachelorette season 16. If that doesn’t happen, it would not be surprising to see Ivan Hall’s name circulating among the producers and the fans as a potential new lead for an upcoming season of The Bachelor. He’s a standout star – not to mention an incredibly good-looking and smart guy – and definitely deserves the love that he’s receiving at the moment.
If Tayshia does end the season with Ivan, that would make them the first Black couple in history to win The Bachelorette. But there’s still a while to go until the season 16 finale, so anything can happen.
