Tesla has issued a recall for thousands of its Model X vehicles and nearly 450 of its Model Y after finding potential defects in both models.
Tesla has issued a recall for 9,136 of its Model X vehicles and 437 Model Y vehicles, citing a pair of specific issues that have recently been found in each model. Vehicle recalls are common practice for many prominent car manufacturers, so this shouldn’t be an immediate cause for alarm for current Tesla owners. The fact that two different models are being recalled at the same time for different issues, though, is a notable occurrence.
Founded in 2003, Tesla is the popular electric vehicle company led by Elon Musk, the often-controversial billionaire at the center of other companies like SpaceX. It markets its Model X as the “safest, quickest, most capable sport utility vehicle in history,” while the Model Y is described as a completely electric mid-sized SUV. Both, it turns out, have some design flaws.
The recall of the more than 9,000 Model X vehicles produced between September 17, 2015, and July 31, 2016, stems from what Tesla describes as an “adhesive failure at the applique-to-urethane interface due to lack of primer.” Meanwhile, the nearly 450 Model Y’s being recalled were made between August 28, 2020, and November 6, 2020, with their caused by potentially loose bolts in the upper control arm of the steering control. In both instances, Tesla emphasized that it was not aware of any accidents caused by the potential defects in each model to date.
How To Identify Tesla Defects And What To Do About It
In the case of the Model X, Tesla advises that an applique — a cosmetic fixture of the vehicle located behind the windshield as well as at the center of the roof — without the proper amount of primer could cause a noise inside the cabin. With the Model Y, Tesla says that drivers may notice noise coming from the front suspension and/or a noticeable change in how the vehicle’s steering performs. Even if Tesla vehicles produced within the company’s specified dates aren’t exhibiting these signs of defect, owners should still move forward with the recall as a precautionary act.
Tesla says owner notification letters will be mailed to owners of Model X and Model Y vehicles made within these specified time periods and that every Tesla store and service center will be made aware of the issues. Once an owner brings their Model X or Model Y into their nearest shop or service center, the vehicle will be inspected for the relevant potential issue and any defective components will be replaced. As with most recalls, it’s as easy as bringing a vehicle in and letting the service center get to work in order to make sure the vehicle is safe for the road.
The recall is a blow to Tesla’s reputation and financial situation, though it’s expected to be insignificant in both instances. What’s more important is the fact that Tesla is taking measures to ensure the safety of its customers as best it can. The company and its polarizing CEO have taken their fair share of heat over the years, but this is objectively the right move for Tesla to make no matter how one looks at it.
