Mark Ruffalo Will Play Ryan Reynolds’ Dad In Time Travel Movie

Mark Ruffalo will play Ryan Reynolds’ dad in The Adam Project, a time travel movie also featuring Catherine Keener, Zoe Saldana, and Jennifer Garner.

Upcoming movie The Adam Project will feature Mark Ruffalo as the father of Ryan Reynolds’ character. Ruffalo and Reynolds are two of the biggest stars at the moment, partially thanks to their work with Marvel. Ruffalo has played Bruce Banner/Hulk since 2012’s The Avengers. He most recently starred as the hero in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Though Ruffalo isn’t set to appear in any future Marvel Cinematic Universe movies as of now, it’s possible he’ll stop by Disney+’s upcoming She-Hulk series. The show will focus on Bruce’s cousin, Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany), with Ruffalo stating in April there were discussions about him reprising his role.

Meanwhile, Reynolds is only newly a part of the Marvel Studios family, thanks to Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox. Reynolds has played the irreverent superhero Deadpool in two different films, both released by Fox. However, now the character is under Disney’s purview. Luckily, that hasn’t affected Deadpool 3, with the movie moving forward at Marvel Studios as of last week. Reynolds is set to return, with Bob’s Burgers‘ Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin writing the script. The news came after some worried the franchise wouldn’t fit in with Disney’s family-oriented brand.

Now, it seems Ruffalo and Reynolds have a connection outside of Marvel. This week, THR reported Ruffalo and Catherine Keener have joined The Adam Project. The film recently began production in Vancouver, with Shawn Levy directing. Zoe Saldana and Jennifer Garner will also star. In The Adam Project, Reynolds’ character time travels to talk with his younger self. Both versions then team up to find their father, a physicist played by Ruffalo. Keener will take on the villain role, with her character stealing technology from Ruffalo’s. Ruffalo commented on the casting updates on Twitter, joking about Reynolds’ playing his son:

It’s worth noting Saldana’s casting furthers the Marvel connection, as she plays Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. She also co-starred with Ruffalo in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. In fact, The Adam Project will reunite Ruffalo with several past co-stars, as he previously worked with Keener and Garner on Begin Again and 13 Going on 30, respectively. As Ruffalo noted in his tweet, The Adam Project has impressive cast that should make many eager to check it out.

Of course, Ruffalo playing Reynolds’ dad is arguably the biggest draw. Though it’s become more commonplace in TV shows and movies of late, it’s always entertaining to see two actors of the same age play parent and child. Ruffalo and Reynolds have both proven their comedy chops in the past, which should make them a fun pairing. Though The Adam Project doesn’t have a release date yet, filming started this month, which bodes well for a release in the next year or two.
