The Suicide Squad director James Gunn soundly debunks the rumors that a new Green Arrow will be introduced in his upcoming HBO Max series Peacemaker.
James Gunn debunks the rumors that a new Green Arrow will be introduced in the HBO Max series Peacemaker. Guardians of the Galaxy director Gunn will make the jump from Marvel to DC with next year’s The Suicide Squad, Warner Bros.’ second attempt at bringing the anti-hero team to the big screen. Gunn wrote and directed The Suicide Squad, which is something of a cross between a reboot and a sequel. Most plot details are being kept under wraps, but it’s clear a new Task Force X will be assembled to destroy and steal something from a Nazi-era lab.
Early buzz surrounding The Suicide Squad has been positive, and the news that it’s already getting a spin-off has only increased it. Gunn and star John Cena are teaming up to create an HBO Max series about Cena’s character Peacemaker. While the show will delve into Peacemaker’s origins, Gunn hinted more characters from The Suicide Squad will be included. So far, a handful of supporting characters have been announced, including The Suicide Squad‘s John Economos (Steve Agee) and Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland).

One DC character fans shouldn’t expect to see, however, is the Green Arrow. Rumors have circulated that Peacemaker will introduce a new version of the archer, and someone finally directed one such report to Gunn himself. Gunn didn’t hesitate to debunk this, writing, “It’s nonsense.” He went on to elaborate his love for Green Arrow, as though to suggest that if he had the chance to craft a story for the character, he would.
Side note: as I kid I LOVED Green Arrow. When my friends and I played Justice League, that’s who I’d be. I stayed up late one night making myself a little hat. And he was my favorite Mego action figure, tied with removable-mask Batman, but even better than Starsky & Hutch. pic.twitter.com/cB5t9KP3US

The most recent Green Arrow was seen on the small screen, as Stephen Amell portrayed the character for eight seasons on the CW’s Arrow. Undoubtedly, the character will get revived in some way further down the line, but it won’t be with Peacemaker. It’s easy for rumors about characters being involved in certain projects to grow on the internet, and Gunn himself has been forced to debunk his fair share of them. In this case, there’s little question: Peacemaker might feature several DC characters, but it won’t have the Green Arrow.
Based on Gunn’s previous comments about his pre-Peacemaker quarantine, it seems likely that the series has commenced production. The original plan was for Peacemaker to start filming in early 2021, but the timeline could have been sped up. Still, fans shouldn’t expect to see it before The Suicide Squad is released in theaters. Gunn has kept the show’s place in the DCEU timeline hush-hush, so Peacemaker probably can’t be released before the movie. Nevertheless, Gunn will likely share more teases as filming goes on, and fans likely can’t wait to hear what he has to say.
