The Mandalorian proves Baby Groot is smarter than Baby Yoda by putting The Child in a similar situation as Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
The Mandalorian season 2 used Baby Yoda to recreate a moment with Baby Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and it proves Baby Groot is smarter in the process. Although The Mandalorian season 2 started out with Baby Yoda taking a bit of a backseat, he has recently returned to the forefront. This has come with Baby Yoda once again finding himself in some less-than-ideal situations. The Mandalorian season 2, episode 4 begins with him in another, as Din Djarin’s attempt to teach Baby Yoda how to rewire the Razor Crest.
At the very beginning of the episode, we see the Razor Crest struggling to fly in space after the patch job repairs done on Trask. The problem appears to be with the wiring inside the Razor Crest and Din is too large to fix it himself. This forces Din to try and guide Baby Yoda through the process of rewiring the ship, asking him to put the red wire where the blue wire was, and vice-versa. However, Baby Yoda is just a child and doesn’t quite understand what is being asked of him. He puts the red wire back where it originally was instead and was eventually electrocuted after connecting the cables together.

For those well-versed in Disney’s other major franchise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Din trying to coach Baby Yoda through this moment will likely feel familiar. A similar scene happened in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 between Rocket and Baby Groot. During the climax of that film, Rocket attempts to teach Baby Groot how to properly arm a bomb to defeat the main villain. This responsibility falls to Baby Groot because he is the only one small enough to reach the epicenter of Ego. Baby Groot understands most of the sequence at first, but he is repeatedly confused about which button to push. One begins a five-minute timer and the other button instantly detonates the bomb. Thankfully, Baby Groot remembers the correct button to push when the time comes.
Both of these scenes utilize the cuteness factor of Baby Yoda and Baby Groot, but it also establishes that Baby Groot is the smarter of the two merchandisable aliens. The Mandalorian has shown that Baby Yoda has plenty of general awareness to sense danger and can learn certain life lessons. However, this wiring scene illustrates that the 50-year-old Baby Yoda can’t understand Din Djarin’s instructions. Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 showed that Baby Groot can comprehend similar instructions, even under pressure. It might have been luck, but Baby Groot appeared to recall Rocket’s instructions and warnings. Otherwise, Baby Groot and Baby Yoda have similar motor functions and personalities.
The notion that Baby Groot is smarter than Baby Yoda is somewhat ironic considering the history that these characters are tied to in their respective universes. Groot has some level of intelligence but he certainly isn’t the brains of the operation with Rocket. He was more useful for his muscle than his mind. However, The Child is the same species as Yoda, who is one of the wisest Jedi Masters to ever live. While Baby Groot’s journey was already continued and showed him acting like an obnoxious teenager, it remains to be seen what The Mandalorian has in store for Baby Yoda. If he turns out to be anything like Yoda, then it won’t be long before he is smarter than Groot.
