Nelly wouldn’t have had time to rehearse, prepare, and perfect his dancing skills for Dancing With the Stars if not for the COVID-19 pandemic.
If it wasn’t for the pandemic, Nelly may not have competed on Dancing With the Stars. The rapper and his partner, Daniella Karagach, are semifinalists for the 2020 mirrorball trophy.
Nelly and Daniella have steadily risen the ranks and avoided elimination over the weeks but haven’t yet clearly established themselves as front runners. At the start of the competition, they received a rather underwhelming score of 16. Their highest score these far was eights across the board for their Viennese Waltz to “Humble and Kind.” The dance duo received an identical score for a samba to “Rythm of the Night” a week prior. Earlier Nelly opened up about how the competition has taken a toll on his body. All of the cardio required has made him sore in ways he isn’t used to. Since the competition began he’s lost 10 or 11 pounds.

As it turns out, Nelly may not have jumped at the chance to appear on Dancing With the Stars. He opened up to Entertainment Tonight about how his schedule may have prevented him from competing. “If it wasn’t a [pandemic] situation, I don’t know if my schedule would have allowed me to do it up to a certain point,” Nelly told the outlet. All of the practice simply takes more time and energy than he would have had. “When I say it’s harder than anything I’ve done, it’s the dancing, but it’s just taxing as well,” he said. “It’s every day, several hours a day, and it’s one of those things where I don’t know if I would have been able to do it if it wasn’t for COVID-19.” At the end of the day, though, Nelly is grateful for the opportunity. “I believe everything happens for a reason,” he concluded. “So this experience was something that was definitely in my future. I’m learning so much, I’m building new relationships and I’m having a lot of fun.”
It’s no surprise Nelly wouldn’t have had the time. For someone with no dance experience, learning how to ballroom dance professionally will take a toll. It requires you to move your body in ways you’re not accustomed to. This was evident when Nelly started the show. The judges encouraged him to adjust his stance and become more graceful in different ways. Nelly has made it so far because of the multiple hours of work he and Daniella have put in to improve their form together and develop eye-catching dances.
While the pandemic has interfered with the structure of Dancing With the Stars in many ways, one of the positives is how it brought Nelly into the competition. In the coming weeks, Nelly and Daniella may be able to earn a perfect score and give the front runners a run for their money.
