90 Day Fiance: The Other Way fans are wondering why does Mexico discourages same-sex marriage if it’s legal in the country?
90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way fans would like to know why does Mexico discourage same-sex marriage if it’s legal? The heartbreak and frustration were all too real for the first gay couple on the franchise and fans empathized with them.
The new season has shown Armando Rubio became increasingly uncomfortable with Kenneth Niedermeier’s desire for PDA while walking through their new town, worrying that it might not be safe for them as a couple. Even though Mexico has legalized gay marriage many do not agree with the decision as the country has a very strong Catholic presence and feels that marriage should be between a man and a woman. It was discouraging for the couple and viewers to watch the duo be shot down even though for all intents and purposes they should have been given the green light.

Many fans may not be aware that in Mexico even though same-sex marriage is legal there is still a huge political and moral fight for some. TLC viewers have watched the couple be denied their marriage license and now must fight the decision since their human rights are being violated. Kenneth already took to his Instagram story to let fans know that none of the meetings were scripted and he was devastated that they were not granted a license.
While LGBTQ rights have been expanding in Mexico since the influence of the French Revolution in 1871 and the adoption of the Napoleonic Code, there are still laws that are used to prosecute anyone who engages in public immorality. The clerk stated that they were not being granted a license saying, “In this case, we have a law that states, ‘No you, can’t, And we have a constitution that says, Yes, you can.’ Sadly, we don’t have legislation that supports us to reform our code. The one that says we still can’t allow same-sex marriage to go through.” Everyone was left confused by the hypocritical standards. Many of these same laws are used against the gay community to this day. While the gay community rarely experiences violence against them in Mexico, they also keep a purposefully low profile. Fans have seen this behavior from Armando as he was worried about holding hands and then was verbally attacked while out to dinner.
Even though most Mexicans seem to be changing with the times, the law still has not caught up. Due to this, many gay couples like Kenny and Armando are being denied a basic human right. While many viewers wondered why they did not go live in the US others argued that they should not be forced out of a country because of their sexual orientation. Hopefully, at the reunion, we will learn if things worked out for them.
