Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is now confirmed to support importing PS4 saves for previous owners of the game looking to play New Game Plus.
PlayStation 4 owners looking to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 at some point in the future will no longer have to leave their Marvel’s Spider-Man saves behind, as Insomniac has announced that they will support the transfer of progress between the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 releases. The remastered re-release of the 2018 open-world superhero games comes as a pack-in bonus in the Ultimate Edition of PlayStation 5 launch title Spider-Man: Miles Morales. It features a recast Peter Parker that makes the character look more like his MCU counterpart as well as all the benefits of Sony’s next-gen console. Improved loading times, higher resolution, and support for the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback are all packed into this re-release.

One of the only issues with the Marvel’s Spider-Man rerelease is how out of sync it felt with the PS4 version of the game. Unlike Xbox releases that include Smart Delivery to sync between generations seamlessly, Sony has initially advertised that players would have no way to transfer their saves from the PS4 version onto the PS5 release. It also meant that three new costumes in the remastered game would be PlayStation 5 exclusive. Many players who’ve already finished Marvel’s Spider-Man had hoped to take advantage of the game’s built-in New Game Plus option to see the new graphics and features.
The developers at Insomniac stated in a tweet earlier today that they heard the outcry, and they’re not working to add an option to export PlayStation 4 saves into the PlayStation 5 edition of Marvel’s Spider-Man. That update will also bring the new suits into the PlayStation 4 version of the game for those who aren’t upgrading right away. The update won’t be ready at launch, but the developers hope that they can bring it to everyone around Thanksgiving, which is only a few short weeks away.
We have heard you – in an upcoming update for #SpiderManPS4, we will add the ability to export your save to Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. The new version of Marvel’s Spider-Man is confirmed to only be available to customers who purchase Spider-Man: Miles Morales‘s most expensive edition. The new game is a shorter side story depicting a new Spider-Man taking on The Tinkerer and other foes while Peter and Mary Jane Watson are out of the city. Critics have said that the new game is just as much fun as the original title, although its short length puts its reduced price into question somewhat. Still, for anyone looking for a thrilling way to kick off the next-generation, there are few better options on the Sony side of things.
While it seems that Sony is not committed to implementing a platform-level feature like Xbox’s Smart Delivery, it’s great to see Insomniac step up and do the work to make everyone’s experience with Marvel’s Spider-Man on PlayStation 5 the best it can be. Gaming as a whole is still on the verge of being platform agnostic, with bigger service games already seeing the benefits of letting players enjoy their content on whatever device they happen to be in front of. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo will likely be the last companies to embrace this future considering they want to sell hardware, although Microsoft is doing its best to play nice with everyone for the time being. Still, with streaming and cloud platforms looming, things are going to be a lot different surrounding these types of transactions in the years to come.
