Mark Strong Excited To Return For DC Sequel

Mark Strong, who played the evil Dr. Sivana in the 2019 Shazam! movie, says that he is quite keen on returning for Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

After essaying the main antagonist Dr. Thaddeus Sivana in Shazam!, Mark Strong wants to return for Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! is a superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. The movie follows troubled orphan Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who after acquiring powers from an ancient wizard, develops the ability to transform into an adult superhero (Zachary Levi). Batson subsequently joins hands with his superpowered foster family, who help him take down the evil Seven Deadly Sins and the cunning Dr. Sivana. Shazam! Fury of the Gods serves as a sequel to Sandberg’s original movie. It is scheduled to release on June 2, 2023.

Sandberg’s 2019 Shazam! showcased Strong’s Dr. Sivana as a vengeful scientist who is looked down upon by his family. When Sivana was young, the Wizard Shazam offered him to be his champion, but Sivana refused the opportunity. He later became a host to the Seven Deadly Sins, who informed him about Batson being the wizard’s new champion. Bent on stealing his powers, Sivana subsequently pursues Batson, before meeting the superhero’s alter-ego Shazam in a decisive battle, where he is stripped of his powers and taken into custody. While in prison, Sivana comes across the mysterious alien worm Mister Mind, and together, they plan on taking over the seven realms.

During a recent conversation with Collider, Strong revealed that he is quite eager to reprise his malicious role as Dr. Sivana in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Strong says that since the movie is still in early development, he cannot confirm if he would actually return for Shazam! 2. But he is eagerly waiting to hear from the makers.

I had such a great time on the first one and it turned out to be such a success. I’m just waiting to hear. I think the script is in development and they’re trying to get ready to do it. Obviously, it’s been interrupted by this pandemic, so things are on hold until such time as it can be filmed safely. At the moment, it’s all under wraps. I honestly know very little about it. It’s not that I don’t want to tell you anything about it. It’s just that I don’t actually know very much about it.

Mark Strong as Dr Sivana in Shazam

Despite Sivana’s indispensable involvement in Shazam!‘s cliffhanger ending, it’s still unclear if the character will actually reappear in the sequel. During his appearance at the DC FanDome in September, Sandberg hinted that the antagonists in Shazam! Fury of the Gods won’t be what fans are expecting. He alluded to the possibility of multiple villains, before revealing that the “unexpected” nemeses will leave fans “surprised.” Recently there were rounds about Shazam! 2 casting a new trio of evil sisters. While the filmmakers haven’t yet confirmed the reports, they have since given rise to speculations about how the sisters will represent the wicked comics’ dragon—the Three Faces of Evil—and serve as the main template for conflict in the new movie.

While it’s unnatural to expect Strong’s Dr. Sivana to return as the main villain in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, his reappearance as a supporting antagonist is only inevitable. If the new trio of evil sisters is actually the Three Faces of Evil, then Shazam! 2 has ample opportunity to merge the new movie’s plot with Dr. Sivana and Mister Mind’s storyline. After all, Mister Mind and the evil dragon were both trapped in the Rock of Eternity, and Dr. Sivana has a particular reputation for releasing monsters from the cursed rock. It’s therefore quite likely that in the new movie, Mister Mind will exploit Sivana into unleashing the three new villains, perhaps at the cost of his own life.
