New photos of The Witcher’s Yorkshire set posted on social media feature Yennefer, Tissaia, Stregobor, and others. Filming for season 2 is ongoing.
New photos of The Witcher season 2 set feature Yennefer and other major characters filming on location in Yorkshire. The Polish-American fantasy drama featuring Henry Cavill attracted a huge audience when season 1 debuted in full on Netflix almost a year ago, leaving fans eager for another season. The show’s compelling characters and rich lore are based on a series of books by Andrzej Sapkowski.
The Witcher centers on its protagonist Geralt (Cavill), a mutant-human “witcher” who uses his super-human strength and powers to hunt monsters and other evil species for a living. Geralt’s travels take place on the Continent, as do those of the show’s other main characters Princess Ciri (Freya Allen) and Yennefer of Vengeberg (Anya Chalotra). Season 1 ended with Geralt and Ciri’s fated meeting and Yennefer’s disappearance amid intra-Continental war. Netflix was quick to renew the show for season 2, but filming planned for this year was delayed due to the coronavirus and didn’t begin until August.
Fan blog Redanian Intelligence shared some recent photos of The Witcher season 2 set that capture actors filming in Yorkshire, England before the picturesque monastic ruins of Fountains Abbey. Peter Lau posted the photos on Facebook. Yennefer makes an appearance, as do a number of other mages (i.e. sorcerers): Yennefer’s mentor Tissaia (MyAnna Buring), the head of the male mage academy Stregobor (Lars Mikkelsen), and Yennfer’s peer Sabrina (Therica Wilson-Read). Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu) is also in the mix—the sorcerer plays an important role towards the end of season 1 in the war with Nilfgaard. Eamon Farren, the actor who plays the knight Cahir, is on set as well, newly bearded and partially costumed in street clothes and army attire.
Antsy viewers have already gotten glimpses of what season 2 will look like: recent set photos reveal Nilfgaard’s flashy new armor, and Netflix released first look shots of Geralt’s costume back in October. Season 2 photos of Ciri and promotional images of Yennefer in chains have also been released, hinting at where both characters’ stories are headed. These unofficial photos from The Witcher set presumably show the crew filming a scene involving a gathering of mages, perhaps a summit or closed-door meeting for political purposes. The monastery is a new location for the characters, who could be meeting in secret. We already know season 2 will bring new witches into the fold, and a few new actors in the photos appear to be costumed in magical garb. The second photo shows a new character, the High Consular, who will be played by Zina Wheater, surrounded by delegates.
Netflix has released an official synopsis for The Witcher season 2 that summarizes where Geralt and Ciri will begin the season while leaving much to the imagination. Season 2 begins where the first left off (worth noting because season 1 was criticized for its confusing non-linear timeline): in the midst of an ongoing war. Geralt believes Yennefer is dead and retreats to his homeland of Kaer Morhen with Ciri, whose powers are growing beyond what either of them knows how to control. Fortunately, we know Yennefer fared better than Geralt thinks she did. Judging by Netflix’s photos, however, she didn’t make it out of the Battle of Sodden totally unscathed. RI predicts Farren’s bearded and shirtless appearance in the set photos implies he may also end up a prisoner of war. Whatever happens in season 2, we know one thing for sure: everyone’s hair will look great.
